Laszlo Varga was born in 1963 in Csenger, to Oláh gipsy parents. He is living in Budapest since 1982. He gave up his job as a car driver at the Ministry of Interior, having completed the cultural manager course. In his interview, given to the Amaro Drom Roma paper he says: "About the realism and the photography-like painting, I have to say, that even Munkácsy used photos, to help his work, but not in such a way as today's artists do, who are projecting the photographs to the canvas and draw it over. Let me quote Boris Vallejo, who also uses devices, but while he does this, he does not consider himself a painter, only an illustrator. This kind of realism is far from me, as is usually from gypsy painters. We love the truth and the fantasy world, rather than the realism. The roma artist try to be hones, and do not always know these tricks of the profession. This of course does not mean, that they don't have the skills, because they are very familiar with the matter, and work in a variety of techniques. Many have tried to define the essence of the roma-art. One thing is certain: it exists. This is demonstrated by the series of exhibitions and events, and the works that have already been born. The hungarian society is quite interested in roma art, because if one of us has an exhibition opening, there are more white people, than Roma. Perhaps because the Hungarians artist turned to a non-figurative, surrealist way of expression, which do not say anything to many people."
